Lotte Van den Audenaeren’s preferred medium is light, whether through artificial neon, fluorescent fabric, theatre spotlights, or natural sunlight. Her work could best be described as "photograffiti," a fusion of photography and graffiti. She writes with light, creating ephemeral graffiti that leaves no physical trace, only a momentary imprint.
About the Project
Beneath a grey tunnel in the heart of Brussels, a two-way road is divided by a central median. Cars pass continuously while people wait for buses on either side. At first glance, this appears to be an ordinary passageway—until two bold words, projected on opposite tunnel walls, catch your eye. In clean Helvetica font, one wall reads "forget &", while the other simply states "remember." Titled ALL THINGS WILL NEVER BE ALL THINGS, the installation highlights the fleeting and transient nature of time. The light projection of "forget & remember" is ever-changing, interacting with vehicles and buses as they pass through the tunnel. The work's appearance and visibility shift depending on the time of day and weather, influencing how viewers perceive it. It reflects on what we cherish and strive to remember, but also reminds us of the inevitable loss we experience over time. Originally installed in 2016 in Brussels’ Maelbeek tunnel, Luxillag revamped the artwork using new Prolights projectors. The Mosaico XL, a 540W zoomable LED projector, was chosen for its impressive 14,500-lumen output and advanced features, including linear CMY+CTO color mixing. With its IP66 rating, it withstands the tunnel's weather conditions seamlessly.
Technical Challenges
The artwork needed to be visible both day and night, and the projectors had to be positioned so they wouldn't interfere with traffic. This resulted in complex placement and alignment challenges. Due to the tunnel’s curvature, the projections were distorted, requiring precise adjustments to maintain the clarity of the words. Each side of the tunnel features a split projection of the words, making alignment critical. To address this, Luxillag created a 3D model of the tunnel and projector positions, ensuring the most accurate reproduction of the original artwork. Custom-made gobos were developed to fit the four projectors, and using wireless DMX technology, the MOSAICO projectors were controlled remotely from the ground with the new ControlGo. This allowed perfect synchronization, aligning the two parts of the words seamlessly across the tunnel.
